3. Break/Release – What is it?
Break! Just like we had recess as kids, puppies need a definite break/release word. This is essential in training as it’s one of the basic verbal commands to release your puppy from the current command (ie: sit, down, or stand). A break command lets them know when they are allowed to move, otherwise they will start to learn they can move anywhere they want at anytime. This one’s short, but it’s important in building the foundation for stay.
This command is often used in combination with “stay” and can sometimes be followed by a “come”. Dogs love to know that they’re doing the right thing - incorporating words into your training like this help create certainty and pleasure for your puppy at a young age.

When can I use it?
- Before greeting others
- Before they can run to others
- Before they get out of the car
- Before they go out the door (remember this is different from “come” or “go”)
How do I teach it to them?
- Our goal with break is to teach that every command has an inherent “stay” or “do not move” until you tell them to.
- Place them into your position of choice – sit or down.
- Wait a few seconds, then give them your release command (ie: “break”).
- NOTE: They might not get it right away. Move yourself and the treat away from them, trying to get them to break their “sit”.
- Remember to have lots of energy and to engage with them over-enthusiastically, so your puppy wants to follow you. Reward and praise them as you repeat these steps a few times.
Try testing it around the house, usually accompanied with a sit or stay!
